Useful pool care advice

The Illawarra climate of coastal humidity, hot summers and heavy rain creates specific challenges for pool water. Here's what you need to know.

Water Balance

Test your water every week, not just when it looks wrong

By the time your pool looks green or cloudy, the problem has been building for days. Weekly testing takes 2 minutes with a strip test and lets you make small corrections before they become big problems.

Learn about chemicals
After Heavy Rain

Always test after a big Illawarra storm

Rain dilutes salt and chlorine, lowers alkalinity and pH, and washes in phosphates and debris. After any significant rainfall, test and treat within 24 hours before algae takes hold, especially in summer.

Filtration

Run your pump for at least 8 hours a day in summer

Your filter can't work if the pump isn't running. In hot weather, bacteria multiply quickly in still water. Run your system overnight to avoid peak electricity rates and keep water circulating around the clock.

Upgrade to variable-speed
Salt Pools

Check your salt cell every season, not just when it errors

Salt cells accumulate calcium scale that reduces chlorine output. Clean it with a diluted acid wash once a season or when output drops. Catching a failing cell early saves you from an algae bloom and a costly emergency call-out.

Book a cell inspection
Algae Prevention

Brush the walls weekly even if it looks clean

Algae spores cling to plaster and tile grout before you can see them. A weekly brush disrupts the attachment process and keeps your sanitiser working efficiently. Pay special attention to shaded corners and behind steps.

Seasonal pool checklist

What to do each season in the Illawarra

Summer (Dec–Feb)

  • Test water twice weekly. Heat speeds up chemical use
  • Run pump 10–12 hours per day minimum
  • Test and treat within 24h of any heavy rain
  • Sunscreen and body oils build up. Shock weekly if the pool gets heavy use

Autumn (Mar–May)

  • Service your pump and filter before winter
  • Apply algaecide preventatively as temperatures cool
  • Net out leaves and debris before they break down in the water
  • Reduce pump run time to 6–8 hours

Winter (Jun–Aug)

  • Keep the pump running. Don't turn it off completely
  • Test fortnightly. Chemistry still changes in winter
  • Clean the salt cell. Cold water causes faster scale buildup
  • Use a pool cover to reduce evaporation and debris

Spring (Sep–Nov)

  • Shock chlorinate to destroy built-up combined chlorines
  • Full water test and balance before swimming season
  • Service equipment now. It's cheaper than emergency repairs in January
  • Book in your first maintenance visit of the season

Let us handle it for you.
